A Short Film from Whitefish, Montana About Protecting Our Winters

Last year, Explore Whitefish and Whitefish Mountain Resort joined forces with Protect Our Winters to advance climate advocacy on behalf of a whole community.

This year, in honor of the 75th anniversary of Whitefish Mountain Resort, a new 11-minute film seeks to raise awareness about climate change and empower people to protect their communities, lifestyles, and livelihoods from a warming planet.

The Rocky Mountains are warming twice as fast as the global average. If current warming temperature trends continue, winter could nearly disappear 75 years from now.

“75 Years” features three-time Olympian and X Games gold medalist Maggie Voisin, as well as scientists, writers, community leaders, and skiers of the local freestyle team.

The film also includes narrative and historical photography on the loss of glaciers in Glacier National Park, efforts for replanting the endangered whitebark pine in the high alpine, trends for wildfire and snow loss, as well as community endeavors for zero waste initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

If global emissions stay on the same trajectory, 20 of the 21 destinations that have previously hosted the Olympic Winter Games won’t be viable for safe, fair competition by the end of the century.
